About The Challenge

Kikkerland Design is proud to announce its partnership with Paper Source and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). The two companies are inviting industrial design students to design a product that makes people’s lives more enjoyable and easier, a product that is exciting, refreshing and artistic under the core values: Live, Give, Create, Celebrate. For this design challenge, Kikkerland Design invited the students to design an innovative product within three categories:

Celebration
Trend: Explosion of cocktail culture.
Task: Design and innovative, new take on a cocktail/wine accessories or glasses.

Organization
Trend: Mindfulness Revolution culture.
Task: Design a stylish yet functional office item that promotes mindfulness in the workplace
Trend: Relationship with the physical and the digital.
Task: Design a product that simplifies this relationship between the physical and the digital.

Gifting
Trend: Everyone carries a water bottle.
Task: What is the next innovation in hydration?

The goal is to give design students a platform to present their product ideas for a well-respected retailer and the chance to see their ideas produced. The product submissions need to appeal to Paper Source's consumer and include Kikkerland's signature fun and functional characteristics.

Assistant Professor Architecture, Interior Arch and Design OBJ (AIADO), Peter J. Oyler at SAIC will be guiding students and reviewing all products throughout the semester. Final products will be hosted online at http://www.papersourcedesignchallenge.com for a public vote May 5th – 12th. Customers can vote for their favorite designs to determine the People's Choice Winner. The prototypes will then be sent to Kikkerland and Paper Source where a jury of buyers, merchandisers and industrial design professionals will determine the pieces selected for production. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on May 12th, 2017.
